Jo for Self-Defense with Matthew Apsokardu

Join INKKS Advisor and author of Tales from the Western Generation, Matthew Apsokardu Sensei, for an online seminar covering the use of the jo (short staff) for self-defense, specifically focusing on defending yourself in your home. This event will be held on Sunday, March 29th, 2026, from 12pm to 1:30pm EST (11am-12:30pm CST).

The Jō is simple, effective, and easy-to-learn. When deployed properly in your home, the Jō can be used instantly to maintain distance and create deterrent or lethal force. The Jō is a classic short stick weapon that is taught in Japanese Jōdo and Okinawan Kobudo (amongst many other cultures).

In this seminar, we will discuss:
1. How to create a home self defense plan that includes the Jō. This can be customized to your specific needs, so it is applicable for gun owners, non-gun owners, martial arts beginners, or combative experts.
2. How to execute four of the most important attacks
3. How to practice with the Jō to develop practical skills that will serve you in times of crisis.

To participate in this seminar you will need a short stick. Measure from the floor to your solar plexus or armpit to get the proper length. Choose a hardwood such as oak or hickory. Appropriate dowels can be purchased at stores like Lowe's or Ace Hardware (they may require light sanding before use). It's also recommended to have something to strike, such as a heavy bag, car tire, or even just a bundled blanket.
